In the canton of Aargau, only the voters in the district of Laufenburg will probably decide on the appointment of a court president at the ballot box. In the other ten district courts, no more candidates have registered than there are presidencies.

Specifically, Pamela Meister, a non-party member, registered for the presidency of Laufenburg District Court 2 by the deadline, according to a statement from the Aargau State Chancellery on Friday. This is a 75 percent post.

Meister is challenging the current court president Eveline Guggenbühl. She was nominated by the SP, Green, Center, FDP and SVP parties. The first round of voting will take place on the federal referendum Sunday, September 22.

39 presidents want to continue

A total of 39 presidents of the courts are standing for re-election for the 2025/2028 term of office. Three people are running for the office for the first time. As these positions are not contested, there will be a silent election in each case. This also applies to three candidates running for vacant seats.

In Aargau, only those who register with the State Chancellery within the statutory deadline are eligible for election as court president. Within this deadline, applications were received from 42 candidates for the 41 vacant presidential positions. The late registration deadline for candidates expires on Friday next week.
