The Thurgau cantonal parliament approved a political proposal for higher littering fines in the second reading on Wednesday. A parliamentary initiative by representatives of the SVP had demanded that careless littering be punished more severely. In future, fines of between 150 and 300 francs will be imposed.

"No discount fines for littering" was the title of the initiative, which called for a higher penalty to be imposed for throwing away a cigarette or packaging. Until now, fines in Thurgau have amounted to 50 francs for small items of waste, 80 francs for tipping out an ashtray and 250 francs for dumping a bin bag.

The initiators demanded that the fines for such waste offenses be raised to 300 francs. Currently, the punishment is too mild and does not have a deterrent effect.

The committee proposed a compromise, which prevailed in the first reading. The minimum amount of the littering fines should be raised to 150 francs. This would punish minor offenses such as throwing away chewing gum. For more serious offenses, the fine will be 300 francs in future.

In the second reading on Wednesday, there was another discussion about how much animals suffer when they eat litter. Implementation was also a topic: the police already have enough to do, it was said. However, there were no new motions. The final vote will take place at the next meeting.
