On Wednesday, the Thurgau cantonal parliament approved the introduction of an asset allowance for social welfare recipients. In future, people who slip into social welfare will be allowed to keep a nest egg.
Currently, assets must be used up completely before Thurgau residents can claim social welfare support. Only those who are insolvent and can prove this to the municipality will receive contributions.
On Wednesday, the majority of the cantonal parliament voted in favor of changing this practice. The Independent Social Welfare Office (UFS) had previously voiced criticism. Thurgau is probably the only canton that refuses to allow those in need to keep a nest egg before they receive help from the social welfare office.
The proposal launched by the SP in the Thurgau cantonal parliament is based on the recommendation of the Swiss Conference for Social Assistance (SKOS). This currently recommends an asset allowance of CHF 4,000.
