Asian tiger mosquitoes have been detected for the first time in Rapperswil-Jona SG. The larvae in sewage shafts have been controlled with a biological agent, the city of Rapperswil-Jona wrote in a press release on Tuesday.

The Office for the Environment of the Canton of St. Gallen and the Swiss Mosquito Network, a national surveillance program for the control of exotic mosquitoes, monitored the area of the old town and the old Jonastrasse following a report. Several tiger mosquitoes were detected.

Tiger mosquito bites are more painful than those of native mosquitoes. In addition, the introduced insect can transmit various tropical diseases.

Containers with standing water should be avoided. Ideal breeding grounds for tiger mosquitoes are small pools of water, such as on tarpaulins, in saucers and watering cans.

Residents are urged to report any further tiger mosquito findings and to remove breeding sites in their gardens. The black and white striped mosquitoes should be caught and photographed.

Last week, it became known that the annoying mosquitoes, which also bite during the day, are also spreading in several districts of the city of Zurich.
