The unemployment rate in the cantons of Eastern Switzerland remained largely unchanged in June. It is also below the Swiss average of 2.3 percent everywhere.
In the canton of St. Gallen, the seasonal decline in the number of jobseekers continued from May to June, the statistics office announced on Thursday. For the first time this year, fewer than 9,000 people were registered with a regional employment center (RAV).
This development had no impact on the unemployment rate. It remained unchanged at 1.7 percent. A comparison with June 2023 shows a higher number of unemployed people: at that time, the unemployment rate was just 1.4 percent. The increase mainly affected jobseekers from industry and the manufacturing sector, according to the press release.
In the canton of Thurgau, the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 2.1 percent. Compared to May, 34 fewer people were registered as unemployed. As in the canton of St. Gallen, the unemployment rate is higher than a year ago, when it stood at 1.7 percent.
Innerrhoden with lowest rate
In the canton of Graubünden, the unemployment rate in June fell by 0.3 percentage points compared to May to 0.8 percent. The hospitality industry has the highest number of unemployed (212 people), followed by the health and social services sector (78).
The labor market remained stable in the smaller cantons of Eastern Switzerland. In the canton of Glarus, the unemployment rate rose from 1.2 to 1.3 percent. In Appenzell Ausserrhoden, there was no change at 1.3 percent. As in previous months, Appenzell Innerrhoden recorded the lowest rate of all cantons in June, remaining unchanged at 0.6 percent.
