On Wednesday, the cantonal parliament of Uri increased the compensation for agricultural land in the event of expropriation. In future, those affected will receive three times the maximum price determined.

On the one hand, the increase is intended to help ensure that land is used more sparingly and, on the other, the expropriated parties should receive fairer compensation, said Alois Brand (center) at the September session. He had submitted the request as a motion in 2022. At the time, the motion was approved by the cantonal council by 29 votes to 17 with two abstentions.

According to the government's report, the price per square meter is currently between CHF 4 and 12. As the demand for third-party land for public projects varies every year, it was not possible to provide any reliable information on the financial impact of the proposal. However, they are likely to be moderate, said government councillor Hermann Epp (center).

The matter did not give rise to much discussion in parliament. The parties agreed that the partial revision made sense. The cantonal parliament passed the business for the referendum by 56 votes to 4 with one abstention. Parliament unanimously dispensed with a second reading.
