This summer, the town of Burgdorf is breathing new life into the old mortuary at its cemetery. As part of a pilot project, the pavilion will become the setting for an artistic installation by Bernese musician and composer Noel Schmidlin.

Schmidlin won the 2024 open competition for artistic projects in the old laying-out hall at Burgdorf cemetery, as the town announced in a press release. His installation, entitled "Music for the afterlife", addresses the boundary between life and death.

Schmidlin uses the pavilion as a sound-producing instrument for his interactive sound installation, the city added. Visitors create the music themselves by pressing buttons installed in a box in front of the building.

The exhibition in the old mortuary runs until October 30. It is freely accessible.

Schmidlin's artistic practice has taken him to the Bern University of the Arts and the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark, among others, according to the statement. His work includes collaborations with international artists and ensembles as well as performances in major concert halls and galleries in Europe.
