Zurich city parties from left to right want to prevent the possible demolition of the open cycling track in Oerlikon. They have submitted a motion to the municipal council calling for the site to be rezoned. The historic oval is currently still in a building zone.

In order to secure the long-term preservation of the sports facility, an unusual alliance of the SVP, Greens, AL, EVP, Mitte and GLP is proposing that the area be rezoned to a so-called recreation zone 2.

These zones are intended for the operation of sports and leisure facilities. The parties are calling on the city council to submit a corresponding revision of the building and zoning regulations to the municipal council.

For the time being, operation is secured until 2030. However, it remains to be seen what will happen to the facility and site after that. The municipal council will discuss the rezoning at one of its upcoming meetings. In view of the broad support, the issue has a good chance.

City of Zurich is the owner

Built in 1912, the Oerlikon open racecourse is one of the last of its kind in the world. World cycling championships have already been held here eight times. And individual parts of the upcoming World Cycling Championships will also take place in the historic oval.

The city of Zurich has owned the facility since 1951 and has carried out extensive renovation work over the last ten years.
