Ten skiers are missing after an avalanche in the Castle Peak ski area in the US state of California. According to the local Nevada County Sheriff's Office, six other people survived and are still at the site of the avalanche. They were waiting there to be rescued. The group consisted of four ski guides and twelve guests. More than 50 rescue workers were deployed until late afternoon (local time), it said.
Captain Russell Greene said in an interview on regional television station KCRA 3 that the sheriffs had been notified via the tour operator and emergency signaling devices. Responders were trying to make their way to people in the area near Lake Tahoe. "It's going to be a slow and arduous process as the emergency crews have to be extremely careful due to the continued very high avalanche danger," he continued. In the evening (local time), they had not yet reached the point of the avalanche.
Warning against excursions
The emergency services warned against excursions in the area. "The weather conditions are still extremely dangerous", they said, referring to an avalanche warning in force until Wednesday. According to the operators in the ski resort, almost 80 centimetres of snow had fallen in the past 24 hours alone.
Castle Peak is located in the Tahoe National Forest on the border with the US state of Nevada. The area is located between the Californian capital Sacramento and Reno.
