Tesla, once the leader in the German electric car market, now finds itself relegated to third place. The US car manufacturer, which still held the top position last year, is now being overtaken by VW and BMW, according to the latest data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.
In 2022 and until the middle of 2023, Tesla led the list of new registrations in Germany. The company got off to a strong start at the beginning of 2023, but the momentum has since changed. With 33,167 new registrations of purely battery electric vehicles (BEV), BMW has overtaken Tesla, which has 31,461 new registrations. VW remains the undisputed leader with 49,234 electric vehicles sold.
The market for electric vehicles is showing weaknesses overall, with both VW and Tesla recording declines compared to the previous year. VW sold 9,400 fewer vehicles, while Tesla suffered a decline of 23,300 units. In contrast, BMW recorded year-on-year growth of 6,600 vehicles in its home market.
Tesla in Europe
Tesla operates its only production facility in Europe in Grünheide near Berlin, which employs around 12,000 people. This factory plays a central role in Tesla's European strategy, but the current market changes are presenting the company with new challenges.
