The Thurgau High Court referred the Hefenhofen animal welfare case back to the District Court of Arbon TG. In contrast to the lower court, the High Court considers the evidence gathered during the farm eviction in 2017 to be admissible.

The Arbon District Court must retry the main charges against the accused horse breeder from Hefenhofen. This was the ruling of the Thurgau High Court, as reported in a press release on Tuesday. According to the ruling, the evidence against the former horse dealer may be used.

In 2023, the district court deemed most of the evidence against the animal abuser with a criminal record to be unusable. Even photos of severely neglected horses, which brought the case to the attention of the media, did not stand up as evidence for the judges. They acquitted the horse breeder on most counts.

The public prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of 6.5 years for multiple counts of cruelty to animals and numerous other offenses and appealed the acquittal.
