In 2024, the number of road traffic licenses withdrawn in Switzerland rose by 8.7% to 86,995. Compared to the previous year, there was a particularly sharp increase in license withdrawals among learner drivers and the 75-plus age group.

As in previous years, the most common reasons for a withdrawal were excessive speed and drunkenness, according to statistics published by the Federal Roads Office (Astra) on Thursday.

In 31,941 cases, the license was revoked due to excessive speed (+ 12.8 percent). In 12,374 cases, drunkenness was the reason for a license withdrawal (- 1.0 percent) and in 8,577 cases, endangering third parties through inattention (+ 8.0 percent).

In 2024, the number of revoked learner's permits in particular increased significantly again after two years of decline, according to the report. It rose by 19.2 percent compared to the previous year. In contrast, there was a decrease in the number of probationary driving licenses revoked (- 14.4 percent).

Highest number of withdrawals among senior citizens

According to the press release, there was also a sharp increase in the number of license withdrawals due to illness and infirmity (+ 23.9 percent). With 7413 cases, a record high was reached here. This increase mainly affected the 75-plus age group, which increased by 39 percent.

Last year, 18 percent more foreign driving licenses were revoked. Revocations due to a failed test also increased by over a third.

After a decline since 2021, the number of new license holders rose slightly again last year for the first time by 1.9 percent. On December 31, 2024, a good 6.3 million people in Switzerland held a driving license for passenger cars. This was 0.8% more than a year ago.
