In July, more money was spent on "Beauty & Wellness" than at any time in almost two years. One of the reasons for this was the increase in spending on clothing. (archive image)

Consumer spending in July was 1.7% higher than in the same month last year, according to the Postfinance consumption indicator published on Friday. This is a significant improvement after the indicator weakened in June (+0.4 percent).
"In view of the difficult situation in export-oriented sectors as a result of the high US tariffs, the revival of the domestic economy has come at just the right time for economic development," wrote Postfinance.
People are treating themselves to health
As a result, the propensity to spend in July returned to roughly the same level as in April and May. "In the "Beauty & Wellness" segment, more was spent in July than at any time in almost two years. The main reason for this was the increase in spending on clothing and health treatments," it said.
The willingness to spend on leisure activities has increased continuously. Restaurant visits in particular are very popular. Expenditure on sporting activities, on the other hand, remained at a constant level, according to the report.
The travel subgroup shows that the Swiss population continues to travel a lot. While spending on car rentals rose slightly in July, hotel stays declined somewhat.
Household items less in focus
On the other hand, spending on everyday goods and services was below average overall. This can be seen in household items, for example, according to the report. However, more money was spent on food, which is probably primarily due to higher prices.
Every month, Postfinance anonymously evaluates the payment transactions of 2.4 million customers. The consumption indicator calculated from this shows consumer spending adjusted for the effects of sales days and public holidays in a year-on-year comparison or on a seasonally adjusted basis compared to the previous month for the sub-indicators.
