Depending on the region, the Swiss forest is in a weakened or critical condition. Pests and extreme weather events such as heat, drought and storms have taken their toll on the forest in the last decade, as the latest federal forest report shows.

The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) announced on Tuesday that forests must be adapted to climate change if they are to fulfill their functions for humans and the environment in the future. Such a forest report is published every ten years.

According to the report, the resilience of the forest has decreased due to increasing disturbances. As a result, more and more trees are dying. According to the report, the forest area in Switzerland has grown significantly less in the last ten years than in previous decades.

Regionally, for example in the Jura, the state of the forest is therefore classified as critical in the report.

Biodiversity in the forest, on the other hand, has developed positively, with the number of forest birds, snails and mosses increasing.
