Five years after its commissioning, the Gotthard wind farm is to be extended by two wind turbines. The Ticino government is now launching a public consultation on adapting the cantonal master plan.

The public consultation will run from March 25 to May 8, the Ticino government announced on Wednesday.
With regard to the use of wind energy, the Gotthard Pass is a "particularly interesting location", the Ticino government continued. This is shown by the experience with the five wind turbines that have been in operation since autumn 2020. The turbines have produced up to around 13 gigawatt hours per year, especially in winter, the "most critical time" for the electricity supply.
The supply of renewable energies plays a decisive role in achieving the goals of the federal government's Energy Strategy 2050 and the Canton of Ticino's Energy and Climate Plan (PECC). The expansion of the San Gottardo wind farm is one of the goals of the PECC.
Two new turbines planned
The construction of two new turbines is planned on the basis of a feasibility study. These are to match the existing turbines in terms of their output and technical characteristics, according to the statement.
A preliminary environmental assessment will show the impact on spatial planning, while a report will show how the two wind turbines can be reconciled with the protection of the landscape, the natural components of the pass and the protection of bird and bat fauna.
