Thousands of people have celebrated the winter solstice at the Stonehenge Stone Age monument in England. Visitors celebrated the sunrise, which ushered in the shortest day of the year, with music, dancing and singing, as seen on videos from the British news agency PA. The construction of Stonehenge began around 5,000 years ago. It is believed that the arrangement of the stone circle was influenced by the winter and summer solstices. However, it is still unclear what exactly the monument was used for by its creators. In any case, the stone circle is only the most obvious part of a whole series of Stone Age and Bronze Age structures in the area.
According to the latest findings, one of the stones came from the north of Scotland. Others were transported from Wales to the southwest of England. It is therefore speculated that the stone circle may have served as an early meeting place for people from very different parts of the British Isles.
