Another woman was rescued from the car with serious injuries and taken to hospital. According to the public prosecutor's office, police officers wanted to check the car in the early morning at around 4.40 a.m. "due to conspicuous driving behavior". However, the police's stop signal was ignored.

Car caught fire

"A short chase ensued. The driver lost control of the steering wheel, crashed into a tree and the vehicle caught fire," the public prosecutor's office said. The authorities did not initially provide any information on the identity of the deceased and the injured.

The National Police, which is part of the public prosecutor's office, has been tasked with the investigation. The special authority is routinely called in when there are fatalities or serious injuries during a police operation.

The royal couple were not at home

The scene of the accident is in the same street as the Paleis Huis ten Bosch, the official residence of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. However, the royal couple were not at home, but on a state visit to the South American Republic of Suriname, a former colony of the Netherlands.
