Thun plans two new bridges for non-motorized traffic

In order to close the gap in the pedestrian and cycle network between Thun railroad station and the existing cycle route in the Schwäbis district of Steffisburg, Allmendstrasse and the River Aare need to be crossed.

A feasibility study has now shown that the route should ideally run east of the railroad bridge over a new bridge over Allmendstrasse and then over the Selve site. A second bridge should then cross the Aare as close as possible above the current power station. This was announced by the city in a press release on Thursday.

In order to meet the high design requirements for the two new bridges, the city is planning a quality assurance process based on the feasibility study, it added.

Thun City Council will decide on a loan of CHF 380,000 for this in July. The municipality of Steffisburg would contribute 25 percent of the costs, i.e. CHF 95,000.

The procedure will then be carried out until summer 2025. This will be followed by the construction project planning and the credit decision for implementation. The city currently anticipates rough costs of around CHF 8 to 9 million for the two bridges.

Framework credit for bicycle bill

As a result of the city council's acceptance of the Thun bicycle initiative, the municipal council is also proposing that the city council prepare a referendum proposal. This is intended to submit a framework credit in the region of CHF 20 to 30 million to the people for the implementation of the bicycle initiative.

According to the municipal council, it is already clear today that the connection between the railroad station and Selve-Schwäbis will form a core element of the main cycle route network. The realization of this measure is therefore central to fulfilling the initiative.
