The money should be used to cover the health and legal costs of the affected families, among other things, according to an appeal published in the Ticino daily newspaper "Corriere del Ticino" on Wednesday.
This "advance" is necessary because the payment of compensation, which is provided for under the Federal Act on Assistance to Victims of Crime, could be "considerably delayed", it continues.
The appeal goes on to say that the fire in Crans-Montana continues to preoccupy large sections of the population, including in Switzerland. "We are not only burdened by the loss of many families, but also by the long duration of the suffering that the hospitalized people will endure."
The signatories call on the federal government to set up the fund in cooperation with the canton of Valais, "if necessary using the funds provided by the National Bank". They include the former president of the Locarno Film Festival Marco Solari, the university professor and politician Remigio Ratti, the playwright Daniele Finzi Pasca and the author Alberto Nessi.
