The Ticino public prosecutor has filed an appeal against the verdict of the Ticino cantonal criminal court in the trial against a priest. Last week, the court sentenced the 56-year-old priest to a conditional 18-month prison sentence.

The man was immediately released due to early execution of his sentence.

The 56-year-old was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault and four counts of sexual acts with minors. The man was acquitted of the charge of pornography, as the court did not consider it proven that the persons depicted in the images were minors.

The public prosecutor has now filed an appeal against the verdict, as confirmed by the Ticino public prosecutor's office at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Many observers were surprised by the verdict. It was even more lenient than the demand of the defense, which had requested a sentence of 36 months.
