Tiktok has announced that it will implement Australia's social media ban for children from next Wednesday. Users under the age of 16 will be "informed that they can no longer use their existing account, which will become inactive", the video company explained.

"If they have already published content, it will no longer be accessible to other users on Tiktok," explained the company, which belongs to the Chinese Bytedance Group, on Friday. Those affected can appeal to prove their age by uploading pictures of their face, a credit card authorization or an official ID.

"We understand that these changes may be annoying, but they are necessary to ensure that Tiktok complies with Australian law," the statement said. Teenagers covered by the law will have the choice of deleting their account or asking for a reminder to reactivate it on their 16th birthday.

Australia is the first country in the world to ban online networks for children and young people. In addition to Tiktok, the ban also applies to Instagram and Snapchat, for example. The operators of the platforms are responsible for deleting the correct accounts. They face fines of the equivalent of 27 million euros if they do not take "appropriate measures" to comply with the regulations.
