A skier buried by an avalanche in Norway has been rescued alive after seven hours. As Norwegian media reported on Wednesday, the tourist was trapped under a layer of snow around 1.5 meters thick in Lyngen in northern Norway. The man was in a cavity in the snow, which apparently saved his life. According to the reports, the man was able to call the police himself from this air pocket.
People who survive an avalanche and are buried under snow "usually suffocate within ten minutes", avalanche researcher Audun Hetland told the Norwegian newspaper iTromso. "Some survive longer. But seven hours is almost unique in history."
"Very surprised that he was still alive"
"I was very surprised that he was still alive," dog trainer Kristian Midtgard, who found the victim together with his search dog Whiskey on Wednesday night, told TV2. "All the statistics and experience say that it's not possible when you've been buried for so long." Lyngen's mayor Erik Larsen spoke of a "miracle" on NRK.
The survivor was reportedly part of a group of three foreign tourists who were skiing in the area despite an avalanche warning. Another of the skiers was also caught in the avalanche and landed in a fjord, but managed to get back to land. One skier from the trio is missing.
