Viasuisse and TCS are expecting heavy traffic and long traffic jams over the coming Whitsun weekend. A high volume of traffic is also expected at the EuroAirport in Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg.

A traffic jam of up to 20 kilometers in length is expected in front of the Gotthard north portal on Whit Saturday. This means that the traffic jam could be twice as long as the one on the previous Ascension weekend. According to Viasuisse, this was "limited" with a maximum of ten kilometers.

The TCS is also expecting longer traffic jams in front of the north portal of the tunnel on Friday. Those traveling south on Friday evening will avoid the heaviest traffic.

According to the TCS, the return journey on Whit Monday is usually quieter.

The closure of the Brenner highway in Austria is also likely to cause additional traffic on the Saturday after Pentecost, as the TCS writes. The Gotthard and San Bernardino could be affected.

The Gotthard Pass route has been open to through traffic again since May 8. The seasonal extension of the A2 exit at Göschenen was put back into operation on the Ascension weekend in order to avoid diversion traffic through the neighboring communities.

EuroAirport is expecting a large number of passengers over the Whitsun weekend and "urgently" recommends arriving at the airport early. The increased volume of passengers could lead to longer waiting times both at passport control and in the check-in area.
