Both the A13 national road and the cantonal road in Misox will remain closed on Sunday. Traffic over the Alps will not be able to cross the San Bernardino Pass. Astra recommends the Gotthard route as an alternative and SBB is looking into expanding capacity.

The primary aim is to evaluate the duration of the closure and the repair work on the A13 in the southern Graubünden valley of Misox, said Lorenzo Quolantoni, spokesman for the Federal Roads Office (Astra), to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Sunday. Alternative routes other than the A2 through the Gotthard tunnel are being examined.

Astra is also working with the cantonal and communal authorities concerned to find solutions for the local population. Certain villages remain inaccessible to the population via the roads on Sundays.

From the south, the villages up to and including Lostallo GR can be reached, while from the north it is possible to drive as far as Mesocco GR, as a spokesperson for the Graubünden cantonal police said on request. The distance between the two villages is around ten kilometers and there are several villages along the route, as a glance at the map shows.

According to "Sonntagsblick", SBB is examining whether the rail capacity on the north-south axis needs to be adapted to the circumstances. An SBB spokesperson confirmed this to Keystone-SDA: In the next few days, SBB will examine whether vacation travelers will have to switch to rail due to the severe storm damage on the A13 - and whether rail traffic on the Gotthard will have to be increased for the summer vacations.

At the Gotthard south portal, traffic was backed up for ten kilometers on Sunday afternoon between Faido TI and the Airolo TI rest area. Travelers had to expect a waiting time of around one and a half hours. Traffic was also congested on the north side: Between Wassen and Göschenen UR, the line of cars was three kilometers long at 12.15 pm.
