This was stated by a spokesperson for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday in response to an inquiry. In the coming weeks, a further 18 natural gas-powered electricity modules and a total of up to eighty diesel generators will be sent to Ukraine. Last Wednesday, the Federal Council approved a loan of 32 million Swiss francs for this purpose.
According to the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, four Swiss companies are expected to send equipment in the energy sector to Ukraine. Some of these generators will be delivered to the Ukrainian Ministry of Development, which will deploy them according to urgency.
This was the Federal Council's response to a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky. At the World Economic Forum in January, Zelenskyi asked the Swiss government to help Ukraine overcome its acute energy crisis. Many Ukrainians currently have to make do without heating in extremely low temperatures. The emergency is a consequence of Russia's fierce attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The maximum funding of CHF 32 million required for the purchase of materials, transport and coordination comes from the existing budget of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) as part of the Ukraine country program. The Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) is responsible for the organizational and logistical implementation.
