Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau does not see his country facing a quick end to the trade war with the Trump administration despite positive signals from Washington. Trudeau said in Ottawa that the tariff dispute will continue "for the foreseeable future". He described a phone call with US President Donald Trump as "colorful", with moments of tension during the discussion about how to end the dispute.

Trudeau had responded to the US tariffs of 25 percent on all goods with counter-tariffs and adopted an intransigent position. Trump had initially threatened to increase the tariffs further, but then announced a one-month postponement of tariffs on certain goods from the automotive industry amid plummeting share prices on the stock markets.
