US President Donald Trump expects an agreement to be reached in the tariff dispute with China. "We are confident that we will work something out with China," said the Republican at a meeting in the Oval Office.

China had already approached the US government several times and there had been very good talks. However, Trump did not want to say whether he had spoken to China's head of state Xi Jinping. At the same time, he emphasized that there was plenty of time.

According to Trump, he assumes that an agreement will be reached with all trading partners. If not, that would be fine. When asked by a journalist when an agreement could be expected, he said: "I would think it will be finalized in the next three or four weeks." It was unclear whether he was referring only to China or other countries. His conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was a guest in Washington on Thursday, was "great".

Trump: Second term will be even better than the first

Trump went on to say that you have to imagine the USA as a "big, beautiful department store" before this business was destroyed by the internet, "and everyone wants a piece of this business." His first term in office was the most successful "in the history of the country", Trump said. "And I think we're going to top it this time." Now there will only be a "small transition" with regard to tariffs. Everything will be "great" for the USA.

According to Trump, the aim of the tariffs is to bring more production to the USA. However, experts point out that it takes years to build factories - while price increases due to tariffs can quickly affect consumers. The Fed expects US economic growth to slow this year due to the aggressive tariff policy.
