The tariff rate for products from neighboring Canada and Mexico is up to 25 percent, while for Canadian crude oil it is only ten percent, as the White House announced on X on Saturday. This lower tariff also applies to products from China. Experts anticipate serious consequences for Mexico and Canada in particular.
Trump had accused Mexico, Canada and China of not doing enough to combat the smuggling of the often deadly drug fentanyl into the USA. He also accused Mexico and Canada of not doing enough to prevent illegal migration to the USA. However, experts assume that Trump's actions are primarily intended to build negotiating leverage in the already planned renegotiations of existing trade agreements.
