US President Donald Trump does not want to commit himself to forecasts regarding a possible economic downturn in the US as a result of his policies. "I hate to predict things like that," Trump said in a television interview on Sunday.

"There's a transition period because what we're doing is very big - we're bringing prosperity back to America," Trump said in an interview with the right-wing Fox News channel when asked if he expected a recession in the US. "It's going to take a little time," he added.

Trump's Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick was far more emphatic in rejecting such speculation. When asked whether US citizens should prepare for an economic downturn, Lutnick told NBC on Sunday: "Absolutely not."

Customs policy unsettled

It was only on Thursday that Trump backtracked in the tariff dispute with Mexico and Canada and partially suspended the punitive tariffs against both countries. Trump's lurching course has unsettled consumers in the US, as the most obvious effects of his tariff policy are likely to affect prices in the US. The massive downsizing of government agencies driven by the US President and his advisor Elon Musk is adding to the uncertainty.

In view of the uncertainties, economic experts are largely holding back on forecasts. In view of Trump's policies, analysts at Goldman Sachs have raised the probability of a recession in the next twelve months from 15 percent to 20 percent. US venture capitalist Morgan Stanley predicted "weaker growth" this year than previously expected.
