Following the shutdown of Tiktok in the United States, US President-elect Donald Trump has once again signaled that he wants to keep the popular video app there. "Save Tiktok", wrote the Republican, who will be sworn in on Monday, on the Truth Social platform he co-founded - as is often the case, all in capital letters.

The app had shut down late Saturday evening (local time) shortly before the deadline for a forced sale of his businesses in the US. A warning message in the app was directed at the more than 170 million US users and hinted at a possible solution under Trump's future administration.

Chinese Tiktok owner Bytedance was required by US law last year to sell its stake within 270 days. After the deadline expired on Sunday, Tiktok would have had to be removed from the Apple and Google download stores and cut off from technical infrastructure. Bytedance pre-empted these measures with the deactivation.

Trump had previously offered Tiktok the prospect of a three-month reprieve, but the legal basis for this is unclear. According to the law, the US President can grant an extension of 90 days. However, the prerequisite for this is that there are promising sales negotiations.
