Following his defeat before the US Supreme Court, US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to impose an additional ten percent tariff on imports into the US worldwide. This is to apply from Tuesday (00.01 local time/06.01 CET).

The White House named numerous exceptions: The duty is not to apply to medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients as well as cars and heavy trucks. Different customs agreements apply to certain categories of goods depending on the country. Trump had written on the Truth Social platform that he had signed a "worldwide 10 percent tariff for all countries".

On Friday, Trump's aggressive tariff policy suffered a bitter defeat at the US Supreme Court. According to the Supreme Court, the Republican overstepped his authority when he used an emergency law to impose far-reaching tariffs on dozens of trading partners - including the European Union.

A short time later, Trump then made it clear that he wanted to use alternative ways to stick to his tariff strategy. According to the White House, Trump is relying on a trade law from 1974 for the additional global tariff, which allows tariffs to be imposed on imports for up to 150 days.

For a longer period, however, Trump would need the approval of the US parliament. Experts also doubt whether the necessary conditions for using this legal basis for temporary tariffs have even been met.
