US President Donald Trump has raised the prospect of tariffs of 25 percent on car imports into the USA. "They will be in the neighborhood of 25 percent," Trump said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in the US state of Florida.

He wanted to make a more concrete statement on April 2. Tariffs would not apply if companies produced in the USA, the Republican added. Trump was also asked about tariffs on pharmaceuticals and made similar comments. It remained unclear whether Trump was only talking about imports from certain regions of the world.
So far, the US government has implemented additional tariffs of 10 percent on Chinese goods. Tariffs of 25 percent on imports of aluminum and steel were announced for March, and tariffs of the same amount against Mexico and Canada are on the table. In addition, Trump recently signed an executive order to raise tariffs wherever the USA currently charges less than its trading partners. Trump has repeatedly expressed his anger in public about the tariffs and VAT imposed by the European Union on car imports from the USA.
