US President-elect Donald Trump wants the China-based owners of the video app Tiktok to open up to an American partner for a 50 percent stake. Tiktok had to be sold by Sunday or go offline in the USA.

On the eve of his swearing-in, Trump told supporters in Washington that he would allow the app to continue operating, "but let the United States of America own 50 percent of Tiktok". There are many interested parties. "So the U.S. will do something we call a joint venture," Trump said. "Whether you like Tiktok or not, we're going to make a lot of money."

Tiktok owner Bytedance was given 270 days to divest itself of the video app under the US Foreign Control of Online Platforms Act last year. Tiktok shut down for twelve hours on Saturday, but then went back online, trusting that Trump will find a solution once he takes office.
