The southern tube of the Visp highway tunnel was inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of the municipal, cantonal and federal authorities. The opening will relieve the town of transit traffic and connect it with the Saas and Zermatt valleys in both directions.

Transport Minister Albert Rösti (SVP) and the two Valais State Councillors Franziska Biner (center) and Franz Ruppen (SVP) were among those present at the inauguration.

Rösti said that this civil engineering project would noticeably relieve Visp of through traffic. "People will not only get their village back, but also a high quality of life," said the Federal Councillor. Traffic on the roads in the municipality will now decrease and it will become more attractive again.

The 7.5 kilometer (km) long southern bypass of Visp consists mainly of the Eyholz tunnel (4.25 km) and the Visp tunnel (2.7 km) with two one-way tubes as well as the twin bridge over the Vispa, which is supplemented by the Visp West junction.

In financial terms, 160 million Swiss francs were invested in the southern tube of the Visp tunnel. The total cost of the Visp bypass, construction of which began in 2004, amounted to CHF 1.7 billion. The Eyholz tunnel was already put into operation in 2018 and the north tube of the Visp tunnel in 2022, wrote the canton of Valais.
