In 2020, Twint exceeded 100 million transactions for the first time, compared to just 4 million in the first year of operation in 2017. The volume has therefore increased more than two hundredfold in less than 10 years. However, in a press release issued on Tuesday, Twint left open what this impressive growth means in Swiss francs.

According to the information, Twint has over 6 million users. In other words, two out of three Swiss people use the payment app. In addition, 99 percent of the Swiss population over the age of 16 are familiar with the Twint brand.

In terms of transactions, around 77% were of a commercial nature last year, while around one in four transactions (23%) were between private individuals. Twint is offered as a payment method in around 81% of bricks-and-mortar stores and 86% of online stores. Almost 65 percent of commercial transactions take place on site, 35 percent in distance selling.

Twint plans to further expand its payment platform in 2026. Plans include the introduction of Twint Invoice and Twint Direct Debit as paperless alternatives to QR-bills and direct debits.
