Since the end of April, there have been an increasing number of bear tracks and sightings in the Lower Engadine. Arno Puorger from the Graubünden Office for Hunting and Fishing told Keystone-SDA that it is possible that there are even two animals on the move.

Just on Tuesday, a bear fell into a photo trap near Ardez in the municipality of Scoul. "The quality of the picture is not very good, but we can assume that it is a male, as in previous years," said Arno Puorger, who is responsible for large carnivores.

In recent weeks, the number of bear tracks and sightings has increased. At the end of April, footprints were found in the snow in Val S-charl, also in the Scuol area. Around 20 days later, a person discovered a bear in a pasture above Müstair in Val Müstair.

A few days later, tracks and sightings were also reported in Brail in the municipality of Zernez. According to Puorger, it is currently unclear whether it is the same animal. "But it is possible that it is two bears," he explained.

Every year in spring, tracks are found or bears are sighted in Graubünden. These are probably animals from Trentino in neighboring Italy, where the number of bears has increased in recent years. If a track is discovered, the Office for Hunting and Fishing informs beekeepers and farmers at regular intervals by text message. This practice was also followed in this case, said Puorger.
