Two young children have been shot dead during a church service at a Catholic school in the USA. 17 people were also injured, said the police chief of the city of Minneapolis (US state of Minnesota), Brian O'Hara. The majority of them are said to be children.

According to the current state of the investigation, the shooter then took his own life in the parking lot in front of the school. The police assume that he was the only shooter.

Gunman shoots into church from outside

The crime occurred at 8.30 a.m. local time during a service for the first week after the end of the vacations at Annunciation Catholic Church in south Minneapolis, O'Hara explained. The shooter had three guns with him and fired from outside the church through windows. He hit children and other worshipers, O'Hara said. The two dead were 8 and 10 years old.

The shooter was "in his early twenties", but there was no information yet as to whether he himself had once been a student. There is still no information on possible criminal convictions, O'Hara said.

US President asks for prayers

Even before details of the dead and victims were officially released, US President Donald Trump also commented on the incident: "The FBI responded quickly and is on the scene," he wrote on his Truth Social platform. He had been informed of the incident and asked for prayers for the victims.

The governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, described the incident on X as a "horrific act of violence". US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem spoke on the X platform of a "horrific shooting incident" at a Catholic school that her ministry was monitoring.

In the USA, deadly gun violence is part of everyday life. There are also repeated cases at schools. Pistols and larger caliber weapons are easily accessible and in circulation by the millions. Attacks with particularly serious consequences repeatedly spark debates about stricter gun laws. However, no concrete progress has been made so far - mainly due to resistance from Republicans and the financially influential gun lobby, who have been blocking reforms for years.
