Police and the company announced on Monday (local time) that two workers had been found dead. The second body could only be recovered after "extensive search and rescue efforts", they said.

According to the authorities, the accident occurred at the Clairton Coke Works around 25 kilometers south-east of Pittsburgh. The plant belongs to the company US Steel and is a major manufacturer of coke, which is used to produce steel.

Governor Josh Shapiro wrote in the online service X that several explosions were heard there on Monday morning (local time). "Injured employees have since been taken to local hospitals for treatment and search and rescue efforts continue at the plant," he added.

One person previously thought to be missing was recovered injured and taken to hospital, the authorities said. Nine other people were also taken to hospital with injuries.

Videos circulated in online media showed firefighters battling the flames in front of a destroyed industrial building. It has not yet been possible to verify whether the footage is authentic.

In a statement, the head of US Steel, David Burritt, said that the company's employees were sending "their love, prayers and support" to all those affected.
