Shortly after 3.30 a.m., the emergency call and operations control center received a report of a house fire. When the emergency services arrived, the apartment building was fully engulfed in flames.

Some of the occupants of the property were able to leave the burning building on their own, as a spokesperson for the St. Gallen cantonal police told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday. Others could have been taken out of the house by the emergency services. The fire soon became so large that access to the house became impossible, the spokesman added. The building later collapsed during the extinguishing work.

The emergency services found a total of 19 people living in the apartment building. Two residents of the property are still missing.

The operation on site was still ongoing in the morning. Around 80 members of the fire department as well as various patrols and specialist services of the St. Gallen city and cantonal police were deployed. The damage to property amounts to several 100,000 francs.

The police were unable to provide any information on the possible cause of the fire this morning. This is being investigated by the Forensics Competence Center of the St. Gallen cantonal police on behalf of the public prosecutor's office.
