The earth shook twice on Cyprus today. The center of the tremors was around 25 kilometers northeast of the tourist stronghold of Paphos. The severe tremors were felt across the entire island and as far as the coasts of Turkey, Israel and Lebanon, Cypriot media reported.

According to the Cypriot earthquake center, the first quake in the morning had a magnitude of 5.3, causing people to run into the streets and schools to be evacuated as a precaution. This was followed by numerous small, barely perceptible tremors. The second strong quake occurred in the afternoon, was also above magnitude 5 and once again frightened people.
Experts were reluctant to make any predictions. There has been no significant damage so far, civil defense spokesman Panagiotis Liatsidis told the Alpha radio station. Seismologists emphasized in interviews with Cypriot media that it was unclear whether the strong quake in the morning had already been the main quake. It would be necessary to wait up to 48 hours.
