The 70-year-old driver left the road at the level crossing in the village at around 7.45 p.m., whereupon his car got stuck in the middle of the two train tracks, as reported by the Fribourg cantonal police on Saturday.
While the railroad barriers were lowering, people rushing to the scene helped the driver and his passenger to get out of the car. They were able to get to safety before a regional train from Fribourg in the direction of Romont hit the stuck car. Shortly afterwards, an IC train traveling in the opposite direction also hit the car.
According to the police, the regional train was able to continue to Bulle. The approximately 450 passengers on the second train had to continue their journey to Fribourg on another train. The railroad line between Romont and Fribourg was interrupted for three and a half hours.
