With the digital and simpler type approval procedure, all authorities involved in the approval process should have quick and easy access to the relevant data in future, as the national government announced on Wednesday. This will reduce the administrative workload for manufacturers, importers, sellers, suppliers, freight forwarders, workshops and authorities.
A new electronic registration procedure for motor vehicles will be introduced in the EU from 2026. As more than eighty percent of vehicles on Swiss roads are registered on the basis of an overall European approval, the Federal Council wants to adapt Swiss law in order to benefit from the advantages of digitalized registration, as it wrote.
In Switzerland, new vehicles can currently be individually approved for traffic by means of a type approval, a data sheet, an EU certificate of conformity and certificates or declarations of conformity or with a comprehensive technical inspection. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) should now provide the data required for registration with the canton quickly and with little effort.
Another new feature, according to the Federal Council, is that the relevant technical data for each individual vehicle will be recorded electronically. Among other things, this will make the evaluation of CO2 emissions from new vehicles more accurate in future.
The consultation period will last until November 14, 2024.
