The violent typhoon "Fung-Wong" has ravaged the northern Philippines with heavy rain and squalls. Nevertheless, thanks to precautionary measures, the island state got off more lightly than initially feared.

The cyclone hit the province of Aurora as a super typhoon on Sunday evening (local time), causing flooding and landslides there and in neighboring regions. At least two people died and over 1.4 million had to leave their homes, according to the national disaster management authority. Reports of five-year-old twins who are said to have died in a landslide are still being investigated. In the meantime, "Fung-Wong" has weakened and is on its way towards Taiwan.

Preventive evacuations are having an effect

According to the weather service, the gusts reached speeds of over 230 kilometers per hour when the storm made landfall. More than 1,000 houses were damaged or destroyed and several bridges were impassable. More than 150 towns and communities are without electricity and 13 areas are without water.

Schools and authorities remained closed at the beginning of the week and more than 400 domestic and international flights were canceled. Around 7,000 people were stranded in ports after the coast guard stopped shipping traffic in the affected regions.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. praised the preventive evacuations of more than 1.4 million people as crucial for the low number of casualties and called for further precautionary measures as the typhoon season is not yet over.

Second severe typhoon within a week

"Fung-Wong", known as "Uwan" in the Philippines, hit the Philippines just one week after typhoon "Kalmaegi" caused devastating floods in central regions of the country. As a result, 224 people lost their lives and more than 500 were injured. In addition, more than 100 people are still missing.

On average, around 20 tropical cyclones pass over the Philippines every year. One of the strongest storms was super typhoon "Haiyan", which claimed the lives of more than 6,300 people in November 2013.
