The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has its headquarters in New York, but the European office is located in Geneva. For cost reasons, the UN organization now has to relocate jobs.
In future, Unicef will concentrate its presence in the Office for Emergency Programs (EMOPS), a spokesperson for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Wednesday. He was confirming a report by the French-speaking Swiss daily newspapers "Tribune de Genève" and "24 heures".
According to a source familiar with the dossier, the restructuring was confirmed to staff on Tuesday. The issue had been discussed for some time, in particular whether the jobs would be relocated to Rome or Spain, the source said.
