From a trade union perspective, it is untenable that the revised cab regulations would open the door to companies such as "Uber & Co.", according to the press release issued by the Unia Region Ostschweiz-Graubünden trade union on Monday.
App-based transportation services rely on systematic illegal employment by allowing their employees to work as bogus self-employed persons. This means that Uber employees are neither registered with social security nor do they have accident insurance or receive wages that are customary in the industry.
According to the union, clear rules and strong enforcement are needed. In the canton of Bern, Uber drivers must belong to a transport company or have a so-called cab operator's license. In the canton of St. Gallen, the political will to put a stop to companies like Uber has so far been lacking.
