Inflation weakened in the USA in February. (archive image)

Inflation in the USA has weakened surprisingly sharply thanks to falling energy costs. In February, US consumer prices rose by 2.8 percent year-on-year, as announced by the Department of Labor in Washington on Wednesday.
In January, inflation had stood at 3.0 percent, the highest level in six months. Analysts had on average expected the rate to fall, but only to 2.9 percent.
Costs for services were among the strongest price drivers in a year-on-year comparison. Housing prices also rose at an above-average rate. Energy, on the other hand, became slightly cheaper year-on-year and dampened inflation.
Prices also rose less than expected in a monthly comparison. The ministry reported an increase of 0.2 percent, after prices had risen much more sharply at the beginning of the year by 0.5 percent. Analysts had expected an average increase of 0.3 percent.
