The US Postal Service (USPS) announced on Tuesday that it is "temporarily" suspending the acceptance of parcels from China and Hong Kong "until further notice". The announcement follows a decree by US President Donald Trump.

From Tuesday, tariffs of ten percent will be levied on imports from China and at the same time a tariff exemption for low-value parcels will be abolished.

Trump had ordered tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada and China on Saturday. Tariffs of up to 25 percent were to be imposed on Mexican and Canadian goods. However, Trump has since reached a provisional agreement with neighboring Mexico and Canada.

The US President also announced tariffs of ten percent on imports from China. China responded by imposing counter-tariffs and announcing a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

On Tuesday, Trump said that he was "in no hurry" to talk to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. On Monday, he had stated that talks with Chinese officials would "probably take place within the next 24 hours".
