The 36-year-old was initially arrested in mid-May and then charged before being released on bail and allowed to give concerts again. The background to the trial, which attracted a great deal of media interest, is an incident in London in February 2023, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police. Brown and another defendant, who also denied the allegations, are accused of attacking a man with a bottle in a nightclub.

The music producer had claimed that Brown hit him on the head with the bottle and kicked and punched him when he was already lying on the floor, according to a BBC report. Brown had to post bail of five million pounds (around 5.49 million Swiss francs) so that he could leave the country again for his tour.

The Grammy award-winner made his big breakthrough 20 years ago with the single "Run It!". This was followed by many more hits and successful albums. Brown had previously attracted attention due to violent assaults. In 2009, he attacked his girlfriend at the time, the singer Rihanna, and was sentenced to probation and community service.
