US Vice President JD Vance got himself into trouble during an Easter visit to Rome with his family. Protests broke out in front of the Colosseum in Rome because the Italian capital's landmark was closed to the politician. According to a report in the daily newspaper "La Repubblica", shouts of "disgrace" could be heard from the crowd of tourists waiting in vain for admission. In the end, the 40-year-old did not show up at all. His wife Usha was shown around the arena without her husband.

The newspaper reported 20 minutes of chaos on Saturday evening. A helicopter had been circling over the Colosseum the entire time. After waiting for an hour, some tourists simply climbed over the fences. The management of the Archaeological Park, to which the Colosseum belongs, justified the closure with safety reasons. Everyone who had booked a visit had received a cancellation email in good time. Vance then stayed at the residence of the US embassy in Rome, the Villa Taverna.
Gladiator armor for the two sons
With around seven million tourists a year, the Colosseum is one of the most visited sights in Italy. The arena, which used to seat up to 70,000 spectators, was built between 72 and 82 AD. Today, there are often long waiting times even without visits from politicians.
US President Donald Trump's deputy arrived in Rome on Friday. Vance, who converted to the Catholic faith in 2019, also visited the Vatican. The couple had their three young children with them. Vance was also seen buying gladiator armor for the two sons. The family also went out for ice cream. According to "La Repubblica", the parents had pistachio, mango and stracciatella, while the children had fior di latte and chocolate. The US Vice President was wearing jeans, an outdoor jacket and a baseball cap.
