Other US media are reporting even higher casualty figures: The newspaper "USA Today" wrote that at least 34 people have died since Friday. However, not all of these deaths could initially be attributed to the extreme weather. Several cases are still being investigated. According to the authorities, some people died of hypothermia, others while trying to clear snow.
Power cuts continue - cold makes clean-up work more difficult
More than half a million electricity customers are still affected by outages, as the portal poweroutage.us reported on Tuesday night. The overview site compiles data from energy suppliers. Ice and wind could cause more power lines to break, US media warn. One problem for the energy supply is the weight of the snow and ice on the above-ground lines. Falling trees can also interrupt the supply.
On Sunday, the outages affected more than one million customers - from the south of the USA to the east coast. More than half of the US population was affected by the winter storm at times. It had been announced as one of the most severe in recent years. According to US media, extreme cold is making the clean-up work more difficult. However, the chaotic situation in air traffic with thousands of cancellations should return to normal in the next few days.
Freezing cold remains - until the beginning of February
The weather service has warned that it will remain unusually cold in the coming days, even for this time of year. According to the forecast, the low temperatures will continue to affect the south and east of the country in particular.
Even parts of Florida could be colder than usual. Some US regions could see the lowest temperatures in years. Meteorologists do not expect milder weather until the beginning of February.
